Howard Wilkinson was appointed with Leeds United languishing in 23rd position having won just two of their first nine games in the 1988/89 season under Billy Bremner who had signed Noel Blake on a free from Pompey and winger Vince Hilare. Sgt Wilko further boosted the squad by signing Andy Williams from Rotherham United for £170,000, Mike Whitlow and Neil Parsley were picked up for £30,000 from Witton Albion, and Carl Shutt was bought from Bristol City with striker Bob Taylor going in the opposite direction. The campaign would prove to be one of survival and stability with the Whites finishing in 10th position as Sgt Wilko looked to the future and a push for promotion.
