The rain relented and the sun made a welcome appearance in time for the running of the 2009 Apperley Bridge Canter, organised by Horsforth Harriers.
The runners were treated to a pleasant evening following a day of heavy rain that left the 10K multi terrain course rather muddy underfoot in places.

The bright and dry evening undoubtedly boosted on the day entries and by the time the runners set off from Woodhouse Grove School the race was once a again a near sell-out, only a handful of places remaining unsold.

The race was won by Leeds City AC's Josh Whitehead in 35:06, a clear winner ahead of Bingley's, Tim Midgley in 35:34. Another local runner, Quentin Lewis of Baildon Runners was third in 36:27.

In the ladies race Karen Pickles of Pudsey Pacers dominated proceedings finishing in 10th place overall in 39:18, almost three minutes clear of second lady Jane Halloran of Valley Striders, 42:09, who held off another Leeds City AC athlete, Jenny Guard by a mere six seconds.

Horsforth Harriers Race Director, Bob Foulkes, said "We are extremely pleased with the continuing success of the Apperley Bridge Canter, it is a relatively recent addition to the racing calendar, but it has obviously become very popular. Certainly we have had nothing but positive feedback from runners on the evening".

Horsforth Harriers now turn their attention to the Horsforth 10K road race held from the same venue on 27th September.
