Pub of the Week: The Travellers Inn, Birdwell, Barnsley
It’s now been opened up as a series of large and airy rooms, with the odd inglenook here and there. The design is clean, efficient and uncluttered, with imaginative use of fittings and furniture and a well-lit bar.
The beers are terrifically well-kept, with a pint of Wadworth 6X disappearing most pleasantly before being followed by a second. The ubiquitous Black Sheep is here as well and there are refreshments to suit other tastes. But the best scores come for the food. I doubt that many pubs in the county would have, as companions on the specials board, a whopping great Barnsley Chop on one hand, and the temptation of a Portuguese Dorade. My own preference was for a ham sandwich from the Light Bites selection, and if this is a “light”, then it would be interesting to see what a heavy one looks like. It was huge. With lovely fat wedge chips. A fish and chips went past, about the size of your average whale.
