Boy, 10, 'critical' after motorway smash involving stationary van

A 10-year-old boy was seriously hurt in a smash involving a stationary van that closed the A1(M) for hours.

The collision occurred in the early hours of this morning when a VW Golf travelling northbound collided with a Citroen Relay which was towing a large trailer between junctions 44 and 45, Boston Spa.

The van had been stationary on the hard shoulder at the time of the collision.

A 10-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the VW Golf, suffered serious injuries and remains in a critical condition at this time.

Two adults, also travelling in the Golf, suffered serious injuries which required hospital treatment.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstance of the incident.

Road closures were in place but have since been removed.
