SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is asking people to mark this pivotal moment in history, and to understand how Leeds was involved on VE Day and throughout the Second World War.

Hide AdIn Leeds there had been nine air raids and 87 air raid alerts. 77 people died, 197 buildings were destroyed, 7,623 were damaged over the course of the Second World War.
So when VE Day came, people celebrated with street parties on the cobbled street right through the night.
Following VE Day and as the victory celebrations subsided, SSAFA’s then Chairman, Air Vice-Marshal Sir Norman McEwen, made a wireless appeal on Sunday May 13 1945.
For those who serve this nNation in any conflict, his words remain as true today as they were then.
