A team of golfers from Yarnbury RFC competed in the 'Wooden Spoon' Charity Golf Day qualifier.
There was a major upset at the annual 2008 event of the 'Wooden Spoon' Charity Golf Day qualifier at Bradford Golf Club.

Rugby club golfing teams of four representing many local clubs including Aireborough, Bradford and Bingley, Bradford Salem, Cleckheaton, Huddersfield, sponsors teams and even as far away as Seaton Carew Rugby Club.

This is a qualifying event for the North East semis and the final in London for the lucky qualifiers which was at Walton Heath last year.

Yarnbury 1st Team of David Hornby,Alan Pirie,Dave Newby and David Daniels in 2007 represented Yarnbury as The North of England Champions at the finals at Walton Heath after winning the qualifiers at Shipley and the North of England event much to the chagrin of strong teams from Cleckheaton and Bradford Salem.

Yarnbury RFC 1st team were the North of England Champions in 2007 after winning this competition last year at Shipley and then the North East semi finals and representing the North of England at Walton heath where they came a creditable 15th place out of around 25 teams playing for the champions trophy of England.

It is all good fun but highly competitive particularly as it is a national event and this years tournament was no exception being well attended at Bradford Golf Club on a sunny Friday.

Yarnbury's team of last year was the same but with one replacement.

Horsforth member Steve Galbraith a mean replacement for the unavailable Dave Newby.

The event was won by Cleckheaton with 88 points but the big shock of the tournament was the defeat of Yarnbury 1st Team by its less experience Hornets side (second team) led by Captain John Rawson and supported well by experience golfer Richard Bowman (winner of the recent Yarnbury Golf Day at Horsforth) and father and son team Adam and Nick Corcoran - the former a member at Bradford Golf Club and was able to pass on the course data to his team members.

In addition Yarnbury Hornets just squeezed into the The North of England semi finals where they will have a chance for glory representing The North at a prestigious London Golf Course.
